Advice to Baruch College

Since New Media has become a dominant factor in the world today, I personally I would suggest some of the textbooks to turn into e-books. Of course the option should remain to buy the physical copy of the book, but an e-book would greatly be useful. A second thing would be to have group pages for the class on Facebook, administered by the professor (this would eliminate any cheating on the group page). This way a student can conduct a forum in which the professor and their classmates can participate in.

  1. The idea of having e-books is great as not only we save trees by doing this but also cut the cost of having a middleman (the publisher), and the physical cost of creating a book. With mobile devices, it would be very convenient to carry books around and get a lot more reading done.

  2. I completely agree with making the textbooks e-books. When I had my iPhone, I had an app that where I could view my sociology textbook in class if I needed to. I much rather have an ebook in class instead of having to borrow it from the library of lug it from home.

  3. I'm glad that you still have an option to buy the physical copy of the textbook. I know more and more young people embrace e-book, but for textbooks, I'll also like physical version because long hours reading through the screen hurts eyes, and it's also convenient to make marks to the important part in the physical textbook. Of the course, we can make marks in the e-book, but it takes time to get used to...I can say some habits are not easy to change. Also, I agree with Aditi's "green" opinion, but the middlemen cannot be eliminated. They'll show up in a different way. As for the group pages for the class on Facebook, I believe professors prefer to use wiki, because Facebook is for the social networking, not for academic exchange purpose, and wiki in comparison is more suitable for academic exchange. But who knows some day Facebook may be powerful enough to defeat wiki...

  4. This idea is a good way to eliminate those big books that we have to carry around. It also very convenient for students that have a smart phone. They can study anywhere with their e-book!
